Create the Resume, Land the Job You Want

resume tipsWhen applying for positions many people will look at their qualifications and match those against the qualifications for positions they’re applying for. A practice which seems perfectly logical, and safe. If you want to make bold career moves, that just isn’t going to cut it. Instead of looking at the skills and experience you already have, look at the jobs you really want, and go out and get the experience you need. This might seem off the wall, and it is a bold strategy, but if you want to make big moves you have to exert the extra effort. Here are some tips as to how you can get the experience you need to craft the perfect resume and land the job you really want.

  • Look at Other Resumes- If you want to create a resume executives will be wowed by? Look at the resumes of people who already have the type of position you want. What types of bullet points do they have listed that you need to be qualified? What do you need to do to be able to say those things on your resume?
  • Work for Free- I know it’s not the greatest option for a lot of people, but offer some of your services for free. In the long run, the experience will be worth more than being paid for that particular project or campaign. Working for free can also help to build your professional network, and that’s always a plus.
  • Try!- Give a speech, write a book/blog/column, create a campaign, whatever it is you want to say that you’ve done, go do it! It may not be your absolute greatest work, but if you’ve done it then it counts as experience and that’s what employers are looking for on a resume. And hell, practice makes perfect.
  • Keep Calm and Carry On- Obviously, this method won’t land you a job overnight. Patience and persistence pay off in the long run.

After putting in the time and effort your resume will reflect the shining candidate that you are. If you want something, go out there and get it! If you really want to wow potential employers, after gaining all of the necessary experience, create a video resume to highlight the soft skills your traditional resume will overlook. Tell employers how you went the extra mile in your own words. They’ll be nothing short of impressed.
